Well this little film is just incredible. Granted, it is about my ridiculous crush on Maren and how that blossomed into being wed. Matt Walker (brother-in-law, friend, film-maker) whipped this up. I feel as though he is really creating something unique. Little silent documentaries. I like that it means a lot to me but I feel like it would be so great to watch if you knew nothing about me. When his other films pop up after you have feasted on this gem, watch "stuff we did" and "wait up!" for more amazement. If you wanted one of these for something going on in your life.... that can be arranged. Thanks Matt.

Been pouring over the September Issues lately. Something I look forward to every year. More to come on what I am drawn to this fall but for now just a few shots from this layout in US Vogue titled "Sweater Girl" featuring Lara Stone looking quite lovely. After reading Marc Jacobs grooming tips in the September 2010 issue of Details I am really missing old Marc Jacobs. I am so glad you are healthy and off all of the various addictive sauces. Also, I am glad you are into things that make you feel good. But really, between the AGONY of your hair replacement and the "having to be naked" for your new BANG! ad.... i don't know. Thank heaven you are still such a brilliant designer. Your Fall '10 show was so perfect (because you looked to your past). Dear Marc, we only need one Tom Ford and most days we don't need him. So I was flipping through this book the other day and came upon some images that immediately made a strong impression on me and I had to know more. The artist name is Michael Borremans. He is a film artist and painter. I find his work haunting, quiet, familiar but at the same time completely refreshing.

I really liked the Marni Mens Spring '10 Show/Lookbook. It all seemed accessible, fresh and easily wearable. Also, in a strange way the accessories seem right. I mean "do it." Carry a wallet/clutch with your suit. Or get a tote packed with gold hardware. I also kept thinking of Beaker when I looked at the model with that long face and stance. Fits right in, no?

I liked it so much that I said to myself, "I don't remember Spring '09 being that great." But I am an idiot! Spring '09 was real real good. I dig the stick up on the side of the hair. Might try it. Also, the first model here gives me a stitch of comfort because him and i might have the whitest legs out there. Pale Pale Buddies.

I know... in someway I think every human is a little sad that Michael Jackson died. It's not like I loved him currently or even kept up with his career but believe me when I say I was pretty addicted in my earlier years. Kayla and I caught a bunch of his videos the other day and I couldn't stop thinking about all the visual gems the Jacksons have given us. From the moonwalk to Latoya's current face... Serious Entertainment! Pieces of this strange video kept coming to me but I couldn't remember it exactly and finally Chris knew exactly what I was talking about, title and all. I know. I know. Yes, it's true. Dirk is watching this television show. And why? Because it is RIDICULOUSLY GOOD. I went wild last year and watched Season 1 so fast. Then for some totally stupid reason I didn't keep my addiction fed and just now got around to watching Season 2 and am making my way through Season 3. Everyone should seriously consider watching this. The acting is insane, the filming refreshing and the music rather good. i mean Julie has Goldfrapp posters on her bedroom wall for crying out loud. So despite being at work late Maren and I busted it to see The Presets last saturday. After a stressful traffic experience we made it to the front of the stage during the third song into their set thanks to Jory and Jo saving some dance space. I was so excited when I heard they were coming back because it was one of the best live shows I saw last year. Despite their sound being too much for any small scale Salt Lake venue to handle (the sound blew twice) they were nothing short of amazing. You are so gross and then you just keep dancing because you are powerless. Here is the new video to "If I Know You." Strange and intriguing. Despite my hate of heat, if Diet Coke and Beef Jerky were involved, I would totally be down for a summer night bonfire dance party. Enjoy.

The really great thing about knowing someone with great music taste who gets jury duty is that they start to post a lot of stuff to your facebook page. Apparently the selection process is very boring but I was the recipient of some visual gems. 2 minutes and 48 seconds into this video I bust. So simple and beautiful. Also, her shoes are too good.

The band Keith is genius. This video kills me. But as I watched it something occured to me. It had a unique pace and angle that seemed familiar and then I read that it was directed by China Moo-Young. Did a little research off of a hunch and she had directed a short I saw at Sundance that has stuck with me for years. Just a quick but emotional story about a rather cool single dad who is struggling with his daughter getting older. Here is the preview for Juvenile. I really hope she is working on a full length feature because I want more!

Mens Fashion Week FW09...

So Mens Fall Fashion Week coincided with Sundance therefore I am way behind on checking out all the goods. So far it is pretty obvious that the word "recession" is officially in the air. Basics in neutral colors (mostly black) are coursing through the veins of menswear. That being said, it is still is looking pretty good to me. I immediately went to two of my favorites and yep, there are a few things I would gladly accept as gifts. First Dries Van Noten and secondly Christopher Bailey for Burberry Prorsum.

If anyone needs to know sizing for me just let me know. Also, is it wrong that I sort of really like that white tie on the last shirt? A little Amish chic never hurt anybody, right?

The key elements of the 10 day whirlwind: Laughing, Waiting, Slipping, Stalking, Long dangerous walks in the pitch black of night, Frigid tempuratres,Eating whatever comes your way when it comes your way, Viewing, Voting, Praising, Mocking, NOT SLEEPING,Bad winter fashions, Puking, Being scared of other people puking, Fake nose-bleeds, loving and hating volunteers, Jo, Jory, Kayla, Christopher, Jenna, Seahorse socks, Shuttles, Shuttles that get hit by cars, & finally some Yogurt Pretzels & Wasabi Fried Peas. Chimay!!!

Took a bit of time today and really got lost in the latest issue of Lula Magazine. This issue (and the magazine in general) is ridiculously good. From the paper grade to the color to the styling to the interviews it is just spot on. You should really check it out. That is if you can even find it. Salt Lake really needs a great mag shop. Dear B&N, it was seriously hard finding this mag. Good thing I am not afraid to dig. I found one copy on the last row of the middle shelf of "lifestyles" tucked behind some tattoo monthly...what?

There were two covers. I of course only had the choice of one and I got Audrey with the wild eyes up top. Given the choice, I would probably have bought that one anyway. I think redheads get a real bad rap sometimes and this cover is great. i do however think this Ali Michael cover below is stunning. Also, her layout is beautiful and interesting. So I have been consumed with fashion lately (no surprise) and I have been especially consumed with Laura and Kate Mulleavy of Rodarte. I was watching videos of their shows and just wanted to thank them for introducing me to two albums that I am listening to non-stop lately. So i know the video is over a year old as are the albums but it is all worth a look and listen. Warning: This is a nearly 10 minute long video of a fashion show. I have been mocked in the past for long clips. So only click play if you want to be dazzled by painstakingly beautiful clothes, gorgeous models and great music!!

So the two songs that I really love are the first and third. The first is To The East by Electrelane off of the album No Shouts, No Calls.

The third song is Have You Seen In Your Dreams by Miracle Fortress off of the album Five Roses.
I was laughing about the cover of Miracle Fortress' album. i mean no offense because the album is BRILLIANT! But your name is so new age and this sort of looks like a Disney Princess Tribute album. But seriously you should check both of these out. Also, if you are super hip and have one a them fancy iphones you should use that neat thing that tells what song your hearing and leave in the comments who all the other songs are by.

I really jacked my back up the other day. It was wild at work and I moved like 1400 heavy things. Just another day at the office, really. Then I am home that night and I reach for something on my bed and to guote my friend Kevin, "it was like I had been shot!" I'm coping, popping meds, laying in weird positions, yoga, etc. But I only post this to say to all you back-achers... I feel your pain. I used to not sympathize with people who always said their back hurt. I get it!! It freakin' consumes your body and it is WILD. Done. I pray for the healing powers.

Sad News. Recently my fish Cherry Darling gave up the ghost. She's dead man. Yes, she was named after this...

But I just wanted to take a minute and tell her what a great fish she was. Super chic and kind of flirty and no I didn't tell her my peoblems like on Diff'rent Strokes but she would have listened if I needed her to. In other news, Panic Attack (my other fish) is doing just fine. Still panicking every minute of the day. Look at those eyes...sheer terror.

Over the past few years I have made it a tradition to go up to my family's cabin around my birthday. This year was a great trip with great friends and there are just so many reasons I love "The Cabin." If my father ever reads this blog this is where he will read how thankful I am that I have had this great place to escape to my whole life. Thanks Dad. So here are some highlights this years trip and some of the specific reasons this place rules...

Yellowstone National Park is amazing and with Ranger Kevin as a tour guide you will learn that there is no known case of a healthy wolf attacking a human...whew!

This is what you eat the entire time at the cabin. You get to the point where if you don't have a treat in your mouth you think something is wrong.

Great walks on trails like this. It is cool to go in late september because it rains quite a bit and the colors are great.

Looking out the kitchen window will tell you the temperature and you can watch birds and squirrels go wild for seeds and such on the deck.

The little cowgirl time out doll at Smith & Chandler is so creepy and a must see each year. I wonder why no one has bought it?

Big Springs. It's gorgeous. Also, this year we saw the biggest trout I have ever seen there. The surrounding beauty and fresh mountain air will also convince your friends to let you take pictures of their faces encircled by leaves. Good or Bad idea... not quite sure yet.

A while back I travelled to Boise for work. Thankfully my boss at the time had impeccable taste and reserved a room for my stay at The Modern. This little hotel is amazing. It is literally an old 60's TravelLodge that has been redesigned into a chic, comfortable hotel.

I can't say enough good about the design. Such basic ideas made the staple motel room layout feel so different. I liked the color palette so much and wanted to remember it so I snapped a few photos. I think great design only enhances the things around it. I literally walked in the room and threw my apple and bag down and it looked like a photo shoot. There are tons of great photos on their site if you are craving more. Oh, and an i-pod docking station and flat screen tv in every room. Daddy didn't want to leave.

So last night became a night of amazing rollerskating film magic. A group of us watched this gem which I just discovered whilst perusing Netflix. If you have any love for bad 70's movies, ridiculous dialogue, or disco music then you should check Roller Boogie out. Also, there is more hypnotically interesting fashion than you can shake a stick at. Um, Linda Blair? Really? From The Exorcist to this?

The viewing of this of course turned into highlights of Xanadu for a lucky virgin to the film. Her eyes had not yet been opened to the hot magic that is Xanadu. If you are reading this and saying to yourself, "I've never seen Xanadu" then you should call in sick or cancel your plans or do whatever you need to to get to watching ASAP.

Also, I apologize to those of you who look at this post and say to yourselves, "ugh, I don't have time to watch things!" Truly though, I love trailers. I hate missing them before movies I go see. I have always said that I wish there was a movie of trailers we could go see. Agree? how great would it be every few months to just go see all the trailers to the stuff coming out soon. OOH! I would love that.

I knew the day would come to quickly when I would realize that I have not updated my blog for a bit and then I come to the shocking realization that it has been nearly a MONTH!! So sorry. At this point it would be difficult to catch you up on all things I am consumed with so I will just put two things here and then try and play catch up later.

First and most importantly...

Can I get a witness? This is not only two of my favorite things slapped together but one of the best magazine covers ever. I know that sounds extreme but I am not kidding. And in case you were wondering I have scrutinized a lot of magazine covers. I have skimmed the issue and can't wait to read it cover to cover.

Second. I went to MIA the other night and have since been even more fascinated by her entire thing. Her upbringing is wild and I am so interested in her music and message and style and the whole thing. So here is her video to Paper Planes. Incredible song and so worth the Ad Rock and Mike D cameo towards the end if you are a Beastie fan.

So I am crazy about the Kill Bill movies. I have specifically avoided ever buying them because I always knew that Quentin would release some super-extended-deluxe-kill-all-the-crazy-88 version that would blow my mind. But it never happened. So the other night i am at Target with Kayla and finally just break down and buy them. At that moment I said, "Well at least now that I am buying these the freaking amazing version will finally come out." Well my friends, Peter just gave me this news!!! It is true, more anime and cut as one film. Supposedly a whole anime sequence about another character. I cannot wait. It won't be out for a while but it is going to happen. Get Excited!!

So I wanted to wait until I had watched all of season one to tell you how obsessed I am with show MAD MEN.
Also, this is perfect timing if you think you want to start watching it because they are starting to replay it this Sunday.

Where do i begin?

Mad Men looks amazing. The clothes are killer. The 1960 setting is relevant and fascinating. The casting is genious. The script is sharp. The set design is a feast for the eyes especially the artwork. I want about six pair of glasses from wardrobe. Each episode reveals so much. Birdie, Don, Peggy, Joan, Sterling and everybody else. I wish we could all hang out together. I wish I had a boss that didn't wear shoes and gave me Ayn Rand books. Also, everyone smokes all the time and just watching it calms me down. It has quickly become one of my all time favorite shows.

So I recently bumped into this group while searching for local music to play at work. I was astounded at their sound and also that they resided in Provo of all places. They were very nice and sent me a cd and in turn I want to spread the word. So I am going to try and post a song of theirs (hoping that they dont mind) so that you can get a taste. They are having a record release performance at Kilby Court tomorow night for their LP Ruins.

Oh Justice!!

So I had heard that the video for DVNO was amazing but I just got around to watching it and it's all true. Justice is so clever. I feel like a kid again and some film strip or video is about to begin but first we get to see some cool company brand on the screen. I am a sucker for a good graphic and this is like a feast. Except you get to see things written like "ugly girls and boys" and "makes girls sweat."

This ting is my favorite new dance move.

So I am back from Philadelphia and Santogold! was great. I am now leaving again for a quick trip but have another video surprise for you. Peter said to me, "I recorded a video for you that I thought you might freak out over." And I did. Here is the video for Great DJ by The Ting Tings. Who knows what else is in store for this hip duo but what I hear I like and this is the best dance move since the "punch through the hole" move in the Yelle remix video. Oh and broken doll poses always earn points with me.

Stupid!! Columbia Records is making it difficult. So go here to watch the video.

I guess I will post the Yelle video remix since I jipped you. Watch for the sweet "round the head then over and punch the arm through the hole" move. Kills me everytime.

So I am off to Philadelphia for work. I will basically be there for like seven minutes and then I am back. But one of the perks of working for a pretty hip company is that people like Santogold! perform after a long day of meetings. This video blows my mind. I am really interested to see her live. So I often take parking risks at my job. I mean risky for me which is not that risky. But I tend to park in hourly parking areas for many hours. Well, I finally thought I had gotten a ticket the other night. But instead....

It was actually just a note from Jesus. He was just saying, "hello friend" and just wanted to remind me that he loved me. The really great thing is that I already knew this but it was so nice to hear it again. It was late at night and I was the only car on the street and I wondered if all the cars got them or just me. I wish I knew.

Funny Games

I see a lot of films. Also, I will see just about anything. I will try not to write about every film I see on this blog because it would just turn into a movie review blog. If i see something worth talking about though I will definitely discuss. So I met some people the other night to see Funny Games. And I pretty much.... HATED IT.
Good acting but just painful. I felt like it was basically written to frustrate the viewer. There are some heated debates going on. Some think this is genious and others crap. I'm going to go with crap. Funny sidenote: we went to the tower and as we were walking in I saw the dvd to The Piano Teacher and pointed at it and proceeded to tell everyone how much I hated it. Turns out they are both directed by cute and cuddly Michael Haneke. I have always wanted to see the film Cache but now I just don't know because I am 0 for 2 with this sadistic dude. If you have seen any of these let me know what you thought. Ooh, the poster is so good though.

My Gem Dreams Came True!

Those of you who know me well were forced to watch a lot of Leslie Hall on my laptop shortly after Kathryn intoduced me to her magical world. Finally, i was able to see her on Friday night and it was amazingly hilarious. I really don't know what to say except that she is so genuinely funny. I was laughing so hard that I was turning into "that guy." You know the one that you wonder when the last time he got a good laugh was. I was obnoxious. So bask in the glory of this hot photo of us. Also, I hope that somebody got their stolen pitbull back. Stolen?

Also this video in the post below is a bit long but so funny and maybe more for those who have watched all the music videos and need to witness Leslie on the phone. There are a couple of moments that kill me. Her rolling the phone around in boredom and the way she says "star." If any of you are unfamiliar then justice must be served and you need to click on her name above and go to town.

Whew! Finally. I have started a blog. Get real excited. Many have often told me I should start one and for some reason the time is now. I have dabbled in blog-dom when I used to help Jo out with More Than Milk so hopefully I can get the hang of this again. I am a junkie of many things...
